With family in town and extra cooking, kitchen drains and garbage disposals work overtime from Thanksgiving through New Year's. Here are a few simple habits that prevent most holiday plumbing calls.
Keep grease out of the drain
Pour cooled cooking grease into a can or jar and throw it in the trash. Grease that goes down the drain hardens in the pipes and builds into clogs.
Go easy on the disposal
Skip potato peels, turkey skin, bones, celery, and coffee grounds. Run cold water before, during, and after you use it, and feed scraps in a little at a time.
Space out showers and laundry
With guests in the house, give the water heater time to recover between showers, and run the dishwasher and laundry at different times.
When to call
If more than one drain backs up at once, or water comes up in the shower when you run the sink, that can point to a main line clog. Call County Plumbing 24/7 at 941-376-1185.
